When Do You Practice?
We have practices 3 times a week, Saturday and Sunday mornings, and Wednesday evenings.

This season's schedule:
Sat 10:45am - 12:30am
Sun 8:45am - 11:30am
Wed 6:30pm - 8:30pm

We practice at Worlds Fair Marina, near CitiField (formerly Shea stadium). For detailed directions, check the Directions page. http://www.xtremeny.com/?q=Directions

How Much Time Commitment Does This Take?
The amount of time you commit depends on what your goals are. If you wan to join to get exercise, meet people and enjoy a day out on the water, then there really is not set commitment level. If you want to be considered for a position on the racing crew, then you will need to put in an appropriate amount of time and commitment. We realize this is a hobby and many of us have jobs and other things which also take our time. Attendance and dedication to improve are some of the factors in deciding the racing crew, so the decision is up to each individual member.

How Many Members Do You Have?
The team size fluctuates from season to season, but it usually hovers around 25-30 active members and another 10 - 15 who are more part-timers. We like to practice hard but we also like to have fun. Many of the members were friends before joining the team, but I can truly say that we are all friends after joining the team; it's kind of like a cozy family. Many of our members also get together to participate in several non-dragon boat events as well, e.g. mountain biking, NY Road Runner races, NYC Marathon, NYC Bike Tour, canoe racing, camping, hiking, mountain climbing. We're a pretty active bunch.

How Much Does it Cost to Join?
For the 2010 season, the annual membership fee is $80. This is the same fee as last season. As far as we know, compared to most of the other teams in the area, we have one of the lowest membership fees. This fee covers all practices, insurance and will also include entry fees for at least 2 of the regattas we compete in. Most other teams do not cover any race fees, which are then shared by the members who race that particular race. Travel cost and accommodations for out-of-town races are not covered by the team, but usually those costs are not very high.

Where Do You Race?
Every season, we re-evaluate which regattas (races) to attend, but on average we compete in about 5 - 6 events throughout the season. Some of the past races have been: Washington D.C., Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Ithaca, Princeton, Hartford, Rhode Island and of course New York. In terms of getting to race, except for the NY race, we usually only enter 1 team for each regatta. This means that member will need to compete for a seat on the racing crew.

Please check the calendar for upcoming races. http://www.xtremeny.com/?q=races

How Do I Get Onto the Racing Crew?
There are several factors which determine which members get chosen to compete: dedicating to practice, willingness to learn, drive and overall attitude. As long as the member can keep up with the boat, learns and applies the proper technique, has good timing and is willing to work hard, he/she has an equal chance to make it onto the racing team, regardless of whether they've been a team member for 1 month, or 10 years.
